I agree. If we want to provide a map, then the responsibility should be ours [Ohio stations]. Alan already knows that I"m doing this for at least my own benefit / fun, thanks to his assistance. If somebody wants to link to the Google Map I'm maintaining, they are free to. If somebody else would rather do it, my feelings certainly would not be hurt, but my intent is to keep it current up until OhQP time.<br>

My intent in creating the OHQP activity map was to demonstrate what was possible using CQ/X to create a KML and displaying it on Google Maps. I really don't want to be the one to keep it up to date even though it's not particularly a big job. I think an OH station interested in the OHQP should handle that job. Once you've learned how to create the KML it only takes a couple of minutes to create a new one with the updated data.<br>

As far as the web site, the Google Map page has a link with the code to embed an iframe on a web page. If the same KML file name is used for each update there is no need to update any link in the iframe.<br>

You can also add mobile route paths as well as APRS tracking to the KML. It makes for a pretty cool presentation and tool for those planning what counties to activate as well as following mobiles on the day of the QSO party.<br>

Agreed, but if one person is doing it, why not "tag along" with a link to his/her efforts?<br>

On the Illinois QSO Party site, and the INQP site, the maps are updated something like once a month for the first few months of "production", perhaps once a week in the month prior to the contest, and the day before for the last minute additions.<br>

But, just adding a link to the "maps" from people like Alan, N5NA, should be very simple. (That is, if Alan agrees that he'll update the map at least the day before the event.)<br>
<br>
But, as you say, pointing toward OHQP 2012 for such a feature might be more practical.<br>

Although Alan's map is really nice, my personal thought is the layout that Tim has set up looks great and perfectly usable. I wouldn't recommend that Tim [or whomever else is doing web chores these days] be expected to take on the additional task of creating a map and keeping it updated between now and OhQP 2011. Using Alan's method, It does require manual intervention by at least one person to update the map each time, and then somebody has to upload the KML file to the website. Perhaps someone might want to think about the map idea for next year... but for this year I think things are great just the way they are.<br>

For those who want a map or want to map their mobile routes, they could install the software Alan mentioned and do it themselves if they really wanted a map.<br>
